Report on Houghton County Board Meeting

Hi All,
Welcome new people!
1. Report on Houghton County Commissioners’ meeting
2. Next up: Houghton City Council: 5:30 pm Wednesday
3. Next steps for this list1. Report on Houghton County Commissioners’ meeting
Several of us attended the Houghton County Commissioners’ meeting last night, 2 speakers (me and Frank), 3-4 additional supporters, despite the weather. I gave the statement below (and attached. Frank Fiala gave an outstanding statement from his position as a long-time federal employee and local business owner, and imploring our elected officials to put aside partisanship and respect the rule of law.
The commissioners don’t respond to public comments, but at least some of them were listening,
Glenn Anderson approached me afterwards for my source of federal employment data in MI-01. (here; and btw, the Congressional Research Service is an excellent source of short primers on lots of issues.) I have emailed him the document and a few other sources.
Thanks to Barry, Robert, and Anne for support!

2. Next up: Houghton City Council: 5:30 pm Wednesday.  Please come out to make your voices heard!
Tonight: Houghton City Council: 5:30 pm, Wed. Feb 12
The Houghton City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. on the Second and Fourth Wednesdays of every month (February 12th and 26th, 2025).
Meetings are held in the City Center Council Chambers, 616 Shelden Avenue.
"Each meeting includes opportunity for members of the public to address the Council on any subject.”
I am not a Houghton resident; I can speak anyhow, but residents will have more clout. I’ll come to support anyone who plans to speak.

3. Next steps for this list
This list now numbers 74. I’ve been using bcc, which keeps people’s addresses private but makes the conversation one-way. (Most of you know each other anyhow.)
So, which option is best for group communication and coordination:

  1. Use cc so everyone can see and respond to the list via email.
  2. Set up a google-group where everyone can see and respond by email or web browser, and can control/remove their own access.
  3. Set up a blueSky account (seems to be where people fleeing facebook and twitter are going)
  4. Other ideas?

(I don’t use Facebook or Twitter/X)
Let me know. I’ll try to sort this out in the next few days.

Thanks all
Sarah
