Quick CRAG actions
Hello CRAGgys,
A very short note to share few important items this week.
Today (Tuesday):
- 3 pm. Houghton County Commission discussing changing their meeting time. to a later time when it's easier for the public to attend. See the agenda here (bottom of the page). Virtual link here.
- Keweenaw Indivisible meeting tonight will discuss:
recent House Resolution to convert the former Ojibway Correctional Facility (in Gogebic County) into a detention and deportation center for ICE––dubbed the "Gogebic Gulag" by one of our leaders. Come to our general meeting tomorrow night where Nadija Packauskas will brief us on this disturbing resolution and we can discuss how to respond as a community.

This week:
- From LWV:
On August 26th, the Michigan House approved the $50 million earmark to Wakefield Township to fund infrastructure to enable the proposed Copperwood Mine adjacent to Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park and the closest mine ever to Lake Superior! The Michigan Senate will decide whether to include or exclude the grant from its 2026 budget proposal.
Last year, tens of thousands were mobilized to defeat a nearly identical grant – twice! Could everyone please contact Governor Whitmer and Michigan state senators? Get email links for Governor Whitmer and state senators and draft text on what to include in your message here:https://protecttheporkies.com/take-actionThe League of Women Voters of Michigan opposes the $50 million grant to Copperwood Mine.
- Use five.calls to tell our elected reps (hello, JB) what you think. They provide talking points on many topics if you need suggestions.
As always, keep an eye on the calendar for organizing meeting, demonstrations, and social and community events.
Stay well everyone,
Sarah
