Special Events Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence We Declare - Fourth of July Event On July 4, we mark 250 years since the signing of our Declaration of Independence. After its signing, copies of the Declaration were sent across the land, often to be read aloud at a community gathering. The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country is holding a special gathering on July 4 for the community to read the Declaration aloud. Called “We Declare,” a rolling reading will begin at noon at the Rotary Pavilion in Kestner Waterfront Park, Houghton. Attendees will read the Declaration, one paragraph at a time. All are welcome to read. In addition to the public reading, the League will be offering free copies of the U.S. Constitution. There is a space on the back of each copy for the person to sign a pledge to support the Constitution. Upon signing, a special commemorative sticker will be added, marking this 250th anniversary. Distribution of the Constitution booklets will run from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Join us and help spread the word.

Enjoy 4th of July in Gay, MI. Check out the annual bazaar and sale at the Community Hall (11 AM - 2PM) and catch the crazy and fun Gay Parade during the afternoon (2PM). Saturday Morning Demonstrations at the Post Office in Marquette:  Members of Citizens for Peace and Justice, Lake Superior Region Indivisible, Yoopers Unite, area community members, friends and neighbors gather for a peaceful demonstration at the Marquette Post Office every Saturday from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.

Parade: 12 PM. Come see floats, marching bands and local businesses Games: 1 PM. Bring a partner and join in the fun. Games include 3 legged race, potato sack race, cookie face, marshmallow drive and egg toss.

Kingdom of Wonders Medieval Circus July 4 to July 9 at Kestner Waterfront Park Free Admission for All Families Step into a world of knights, magic, and high‑flying adventure as the Kingdom of Wonders Medieval Circus brings its traveling Renaissance show to Houghton. This outdoor, family‑friendly circus blends storytelling, acrobatics, aerial silks, juggling, comedy, and colorful characters in a lively performance for all ages. Follow a brave knight and his sidekick as they journey to reclaim the kingdom from a mischievous witch and her dragon. The Special Meetings for Work Sessions for the Board of Commissioners for the County of Houghton will be held in the Conference Room on the fifth floor of the Houghton County Courthouse on the 1ST Monday of each month. All meetings will commence at 10:00 A.M. Notes from Faith M: As of March 2025 the Houghton County Board is having monthly “work sessions” on the first Mondays of the month (unless otherwise rescheduled). They are listed as open meetings on the County’s website. The minutes of the first one from March are a doozy. They have discovered that since 2020 they have not been doing the needful with respect to paying the public defenders office. Yikes-o-rama. Also, there were three Republicans and no Democrats at that meeting.

This project related to America250 and the Declaration of Independence - “Sharing the Spirit of America” is a nationwide program initiated and sponsored by the Hawai‘i America250 Commission. Just as the Declaration of Independence was read to the people on July 8, 1776, now, 250-years later, Americans in all 50 States, 5 Territories, the District of Columbia, and Minor Outlying Islands of the United States will read the Declaration of Independence ‘together’. Even though the United States is spread across thousands of miles and ten different time zones, all of us in America may read the Declaration of Independence ‘together’, at the ‘same’ time. Unlike the extent of the Colonies in 1776, today, America spans about 9,500-miles from one extreme to the other (the Caribbean across North America to the western edge of the Pacific). With a start time based on 6 pm (EDT), July 8, 2026 (commemorating the first public reading), people in communities across America will begin reading the Declaration of Independence.

Volunteers are also needed to assist with setup, cooking, visitor engagement and vendor support to help create welcoming, community-centered experience for attendees. We've been doing potlucks and craft circles for about a little more than a year now, and we're putting together some community gardening and food distribution projects for this coming year. We also had a bake sale during winter Carnival, where we were able to raise enough money to send $250 down to mutual aid funds in the twin cities and start a mutual aid fund up here. We're also working on a website for basic info and a form to submit requests for mutual aid.

Houghton County Jail Committee will hold a meeting (“Industry Day”) at Franklin Township Hall, 49850 US Hwy 41 Hancock, MI on Wed. July 15, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. to receive input on the design and construction of a new jail and sheriff’s office. The meeting is open to the public. The County is seeking rough order of magnitude (ROM) estimates of the cost for building a jail and sheriff’s office at the county-owned property at 19741 Sharon Av. in Houghton. The new facility shall have space for no fewer than 60 inmates (up to 70) and shall contain working spaces sufficient in size for serving that number of inmates. The facility is subject to the Michigan Department of Corrections regulations for building jails. Builders and contractors are invited to learn about the project by reviewing the documents posted here. Regular potluck of the Keweenaw Mutual Aid Collective Potlucks, 2nd and 4th Saturdays KMAC: Keweenaw Mutual Aid Collective! We've been doing potlucks and craft circles for about a little more than a year now, and we're putting together some community gardening and food distribution projects for this coming year. We also had a bake sale during winter Carnival, where we were able to raise enough money to send $250 down to mutual aid funds in the twin cities and start a mutual aid fund up here. We're also working on a website for basic info and a form to submit requests for mutual aid.
